In cycling, a century is 100 miles in one day. For the less, umm, at h letic, a metric century is 100 kilometers.

Using the same logic, a Kinja Century is 100 stars on one comment/article. After years of kicking around this place, I finally made it.

In America, 16 buses is a standard unit of measure.

I hate high belt lines so much. Plus the pedestrian crash safety laws. Which makes the front ends even higher.....

Since I know what a chain is, I can look up the conversions!

Gunter’s: 2.90909091

Metric: 2.92608

Ramsden’s (aka Engineer’s) : 1.92

I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten a ludicrous number of recommends on an FP article (at least north of 80?) but I’m equally sure that it was for something really juvenile.

They used chains extensively to measure out the western united states, I saw one in person at a surveying museum in Lansing MI, I was the only one in there totally geeking out.

I found it by accident looking for a different comment.... I think the authors bury the comments that call out their shitty narratives.

Except they were using the graphics given to them by history channel. They didn't create those graphics themselves

I didn’t know anything about chains until I had to learn a little bit about surveying. If you want some really gut-wrenching reading, take a look at the situation in Colorado, outlined in two articles: A Misguided General Land Office Policy ; and The Sanctity of Monuments .

In short, a Colorado GLO policy held that the sanctity of  patents was greater than the sanctity of monuments. This wouldn’t be much of an issue except that there was a lot of shoddy surveying work done in Colorado and many patents don’t properly describe the locations of undisturbed monuments. Fun times being a surveyor in Colorado.

How does the saying go? Garbage in, garbage out.

Responsible reporting would have meant not using the graphics or updating the graphics.

As a rule, I taught students that every map they create should be a standalone product. If the map can’t be read without supporting information, then it is incomplete.

Gizmodo and Jalopnik are notorious for taking graphics out of context and not providing enough supporting information to understand the graphics. They just say, “Oooooo, pretty!” and then throw it into their article.

But they did provide supporting info in the article itself. In the article itself it lists all the jump lengths

It appears you missed my point. If you are going to create a graphic, it should be self-supporting, self-sufficient, or go one step further and provide MORE information than is available in the article. Graphics should make the article easier to understand. They shouldn’t require the reader to dig around in the article to pick up missing information, especially when that information is the whole point of the article!
